The model was approved by the Standing Committee of the IFLA Section on Cataloguing in 1997. There are four entities in the model including WORK, The resulting namespaces vary considerably in the number of elements defined, with FRSAD being quite small, and FRBR (entity-relationship definition) being the largest. In the ISBD, national bibliographic agencies are called upon to "prepare the definitive description containing all the mandatory elements set out in the ISBD insofar as the information (2012).

Today we might expand the use of FRBR to the rights management or preservation domains and add other tasks, like attributing royalties to or preserving. FRBR is an evolving model and will be extended in the future. The names of the MEI entities generally follow those of FRBR: the work element is a container for description at the FRBR “work” level, expression is for description at the FRBR “expression” level, and item holds FRBR “item” level description. FRBR specifies that intellectual or artistic products include the following types of entities:  the work, a distinct intellectual or artistic creation  the expression, the intellectual or artistic realization of a work  the manifestation, the physical embodiment of an expression of a work FRBR comprises groups of entities: Group 1 entities are work, expression, manifestation, and item (WEMI). They represent the products of intellectual or artistic endeavor. Group 2 entities are person, family and corporate body, responsible for the custodianship of Group 1’s intellectual or artistic endeavor.

12 Aug 2014 Q: Why is understanding FRBR FRBR model of bibliographic entities 12. ENTITY elements. Value. Entity-Relationship Conceptual Model.

Robin Fay LibraryScope RDA includes new elements (MARC fields) to better categorize media and other types of materials An attempt at a simplified explanation of FRBR FRBR and FRAD models, so one option that was under considera-tion for an RDA namespace was to refer to IFLA FRBR and FRAD namespaces where possible. And so the Review Group decided to start a new project, Namespaces for FRBR entities/elements in RDF, with the specific task being “to define appropriate namespaces for FRBR's main impact was that it provided a mental model of the bibliographic universe that reflects a conceptual view of the elements of descriptive cataloging. You will find nothing in FRBR that could not be found in standard library cataloging of the 1990's, which is when the FRBR model was developed.
